  • WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Senate Democrats “Increasingly Poised to Flip the Upper Chamber” as Republicans Face “Sour National Environment”

The Independent: “The Cook Political Report shifted four Senate races to favor Democratic candidates as the minority party looks increasingly poised to flip the upper chamber”

The Daily Beast: “Control of the Senate is trending in the Democrats’ favor as Americans become increasingly frustrated with President Donald Trump and his Republican Party”

In case you missed it, a wave of new reporting is highlighting how Senate Democrats are “increasingly poised to flip the upper chamber” as election analysts at Cook Political Report shift multiple Senate races toward Democrats.

Voters are “frustrated” with Senate Republicans, who are “on defense” as they face an “increasingly sour national environment” that has resulted in the Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio Senate races moving in Democrats’ direction.

Across the map, Democrats have created a clear path to taking back the Senate majority by recruiting all-star candidates, building strong general-election infrastructure, and capitalizing on a Republican field defined by weak and deeply flawed nominees.

Puck News: The Senate Oracle Speaks!

    • Jessica Taylor, the renowned Senate analyst at the Cook Political Report, has the power to alter moods all over the Hill. Every minute update to her closely tracked ratings—say, moving a race out of the “tossup” column—can validate the perception of a party’s momentum… or serve as a harsh sobriety check. That’s especially true when Taylor moves multiple races all in one direction, as she did today when the Cook Political Report shifted four Senate races toward Democrats.
    • Democrats, already bullish on their odds of flipping the House in the midterms, now see a path to retaking the Senate, too.
    • […] Taylor’s new map has jolted Washington—especially at a moment when Hill insiders were already on tenterhooks waiting to see how rising gas prices are tilting the playing field.

NPR: New report suggests Democrats have better odds in some upcoming Senate races

    • November’s midterms will determine the balance of power in Congress for at least the following two years. The latest Cook Political Report suggests the odds are shifting in favor of Democrats, at least in some Senate races. […]
    • [Trump is] hovering right at 40% or just below 40%. We’ve seen special elections across the country where Democrats have been more energized. We had a congressional race last week in Georgia where the Democrat did not win, but overperformed by 25 points. So Georgia is one of the races that we have shifted in Democrats’ favor with the incumbent there, Jon Ossoff, looking, you know, still going to be a competitive race.
    • These races in Georgia and North Carolina are always close. But you look at where the president is. He’s mired in an unpopular war. The ceasefire is so tenuous, as you all have been discussing on the program, gas prices are skyrocketing. The economy – he’s at his lowest numbers on the economy and on immigration, which used to be sort of his secret sauce. And so all of these things are reflecting upon his party, because, really, the midterms, they’re a referendum on the President’s party.
    • Republicans have] got to address the economy. They’ve got to address inflation, and everything that’s happening in the Middle East is making that worse, and it’s reflecting upon the Senate races overall.

    • And on where Democrats are just more enthused than Republicans, I think that Democrats have recruited strong candidates in some of these races that we have shifted, like North Carolina, where they’ve gotten former governor Roy Cooper in that contest. He’s won while Trump has been on the ballot, so voters are used to splitting their ticket. We’ve seen consistent polling of him leading the former RNC chair who Trump handpicked to run in that state, Michael Whatley. In Ohio, you have Sherrod Brown, who lost last cycle, but overperformed Kamala Harris in the state enough that if this is a, you know, D+5, D+6 environment, as the generic ballot tells us, that that race is very much in place. So that’s one of the reasons that we shifted it from lean Republican into toss up.

The Independent: Four major races shift in favor of Democrats as Senate looks more likely to swing in their favor

    • The Cook Political Report shifted four Senate races to favor Democratic candidates as the minority party looks increasingly poised to flip the upper chamber.
    • The report changed its rating for North Carolina’s Senate race from a toss-up to “lean Democratic.” […] Trump won the state three times, but Cooper won his two terms as governor when he shared a ticket with Trump in 2016 and 2020. A poll last month from The Carolina Journal, a conservative outlet, found that Cooper leads the race by eight points.
    • Cook also changed the rating for Georgia from toss-up to lean Democratic. […] Ossoff has proven to be an adept fundraiser and campaigner.
    • Republicans have also failed to field a credible candidate after term-limited Gov. Brian Kemp passed on running. Instead, he’s backed former University of Tennessee football head coach Derek Dooley, who has failed to catch steam. Reps. Buddy Carter and Mike Collins are also running. An Emerson College poll showed the incumbent beating all three Republicans.
    • Cook also shifted the Ohio Senate race from lean Republican to a toss-up […] Democrats believe Brown, with his name recognition and unique brand, can flip the seat and beat Husted.

Daily Beast: GOP Faces Growing Threat of Losing Senate Over Trump Turmoil

    • Control of the Senate is trending in the Democrats’ favor as Americans become increasingly frustrated with President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
    • The Cook Political Report shifted four Senate races toward Democrats, signaling their growing likelihood of retaking the chamber despite heading into the midterms with a Senate map that once favored Republicans.
    • Despite the president winning North Carolina and Georgia in the 2024 election, the Cook Political Report has now shifted both Senate races from “Toss Up” to “Lean Democrat.”
    • While both states are deeply purple, even in red states, the non-partisan analysis is moving races toward Democrats. It shifted the race in Ohio from “Lean Republican” to a “Toss Up,” while the Senate race in Nebraska has gone from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican.”
    • Meanwhile, Republicans in Georgia are in a heated primary to run against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, who has been raking in massive sums of cash for the general election. The GOP primary to decide his competitor isn’t until May 19.
    • But in an even more unlikely twist, the Ohio Senate race is also looking ever more competitive […]
    • Democrats need to flip four seats to retake the majority in the Senate. While the map appeared to favor Republicans keeping the Senate, the escalating anger at the president, his war, and persistent high prices continue to shift the political climate.
    • Democrats have outperformed in a series of races even in red states and districts since Trump took over. Just last week, a Democrat outperformed in the Georgia district previously held by GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. The Democrat-backed judge also won the statewide race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court by sizable margins.
    • A series of Democratic candidates have also managed to flip more than two dozen state legislative seats from red to blue across the country since Trump took office, further hinting at a building blue wave this fall.

    Let’s Win Back the Senate

When we say that Senate Democrats are counting on grassroots donors, we’re not kidding. In fact, 98% of donations to the DSCC during the 2024 election came from donors giving less than $200.

And every gift you give the DSCC is a gift that helps propel Democratic Senate candidates to victory.
